Kingsmen Swing for SCIAC Championship

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's golf team had a successful fall season as the team won a tournament and placed third in another. The Kingsmen are looking to carry that momentum into the spring season and have their sights set on a SCIAC Championship.

CLU returns a good core of the team from last year as 11 Kingsmen are back. The team will also get immediate help as four student-athletes look to help the Violet and Gold advance to the NCAA Tournament.

The seniors look to go out on top and have high expectations for themselves and the team. The main goal is to win the SCIAC Championship. The senior class includes Jack Cavanagh, Tyler Ferrier, Brian Helmuth, Zane Jarrett, Andrew McLean and Ricardo Torres.

In the two fall events, Ferrier tied for ninth at the CA Stats Invitational and tied for 12th at the Al and Nancy Jones Memorial Tournament. He shot a career-best one-under-par (71) twice. Last year, he averaged a 77.7 over 13 rounds of action. Torres came on late in the 2017 season and shot an average of 76 over five rounds of play. The rest of the senior did not compete in the fall tournaments, but are ready to get out there in the spring.

The junior class includes Nick Friend, Jake Rosen and Tyler Shuster. Friend only played in one tournament during the 2016-17 season and recorded an amazing hole-in-one at Tustin Ranch Golf Course. All three will be fighting for expanded roles in 2018.

There two sophomore competing for the Kingsmen as Drew Christofferson and Craig Thorlakson are back for their second year. Christofferson played in 15 rounds of golf as a true freshman. He had a stroke average of 76.93. Shot a low-round of four-under-par.

The freshman looking to make some noise in the Violet and Gold are Drake Jones, Ryan Kyaw, Jackson Murrell and Slater Sivage. Jones and Savage both competed in fall events. Jones tied for ninth at the CA State Invitational. It was his first collegiate event. He shot two one-under-par rounds. Sivage tied for 15th at the same tournament.

The Kingsmen open the season Monday at 8 a.m. in the CSU San Marcos Invitational at Shadowridge Golf Course.
