Brodnax Tops Podium in the 400m Dash at SCIAC Championships Finale

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Junior Chris Brodnax, junior Obasi Dees, freshman Emilio Guajardo and the Kingsmen 4x100 relay team all made their way to the podium, Sunday, highlighting the final day of the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships for Cal Lutheran. 

Taking home the 400-meter title, Brodnax ran a lifetime-best 48.31-second dash, not only the seventh best time in Cal Lutheran history, but also the 17th best time amongst all NCAA Division III racers in the nation this season. 

Joining him on the podium, Dees took second in the 200-meter dash and third in the 100-meter dash. He clocked in at 21.63 seconds in the 200-meter – a lifetime PR, the third best time in program history and the 20th best time in the nation – and at 10.78 seconds in the 100-meter. 

Also on the podium, Guajardo tied for second in the high jump with a career-best 1.82 meters. And rounding out the day's top-three finishes, Dees, Brodnax, and freshmen Evan Cox and Hasant Moses-Hillman combined for third in the 4x100 relay, finishing in 42.85 seconds. Dees, Cox, and Bordnax went on to also take seventh in the 4x400 relay with sophomore Connor Neufeld-Griffin at 3:28.82. 

Cox went on to take fifth in the 110-meter hurdles at 15.63 seconds and seventh in the 400-meter hurdles at 56.14 seconds. Alongside him on the track, Neufeld-Griffin finished 11th in the 1500-meter run at 4:07.11 and junior Rigoberto Baza came in 31st in the 5000-meter run at 16:17.17. 

In the field events, senior Jordan Wiley recorded a lifetime PR in the pole vault, clearing 3.96 meters for 11th place. Also with career-bests, junior Daniel Avila PR'ed in the shot put at 12.37 meters for ninth place, and additionally took 15th in the discus at 35.87 meters. Fellow thrower, senior Anthony Flores, also notched a PR in the discus at 35.71 meters, and later took 18th in the shot put at 10.51 meters. And rounding out the crew, freshman Brendon Carbullido finished 10th in the triple jump at 12.41 meters. 

The season is not over yet, though, for Cal Lutheran as the team heads to Los Angeles on Saturday, May 11, for the Occidental Invitational.
