THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Men's Track & Field team heads to Burns Track Complex in Claremont, California, this weekend for the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships on April 27-28.
As it stands, the Kingsmen are tied with La Verne and Whittier for fifth in the conference standings with three dual points. Their results from this weekend's championships will be added to their dual points to determine their final conference standings.
"The team has trained extremely hard this season and they're completely ready for SCIAC Championships," said head coach Matt Lea, "I know that the coaching staff and myself are excited to get the meet started and underway. It should be an entertaining meet with a lot of great athletes and performances."
Leading the charge into championship weekend, junior Obasi Dees claimed the 100-meter and 200-meter title this season at the SCIAC Multi-Dual No. 2, amongst his seven top-five finishes on the year. In the national standings, he currently sits in 24th in the 200-meter dash (21.71 sec.) and 25th in the 100-meter dash (10.75 sec.) – both lifetime personal bests notched this season.
Joining him on the track, junior Chris Brodnax is 17th in the nation in the 400-meter dash with a team leading 48.58-second time which secured him first at the SCIAC Multi Dual No. 1. He also joins Dees, freshman Evan Cox and senior Trent Mosley for the team-leading 42.23 time in the 4x100 relay; and Dees, Cox and sophomore Connor Neufeld-Griffin for the team-best 3:22.88 time in the 4x400 relay.
Rounding out the track crew, Cox has also impressed in his first season as a Kingsmen. The Ventura-county native has claimed first in both the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. In his last meet, SCIAC Multi-Dual No. 3, the freshman recorded lifetime bests in both events, taking first in the 400-meters hurdles (54.38 sec.) and second in the 110-meter hurdles (15.63 sec.) to earn himself SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week honors.
Moving on to the longer distances, Griffin leads the way with team-leading times in the 800-meter (1:58.11), 1500-meter (4:04.12) and mile (4:28.12). Joining him, junior Rigoberto Baza holds down the 3000-meter (9:07.06) and 5000-meter (15:50.16) runs.
In the field events, junior Daniel Avila and senior Anthony Flores have dominated the throwing events for the Kingsmen. Avila leads the team with a 37.52-meter toss in the discus throw and 11.94-meter mark in the shotput, while Flores locks down the hammer at 42.22 meters.
Rounding out the field crew, freshman Brendon Carbullido leads Cal Lutheran in the long jump and triple jump. He left the Redlands Invitational with a personal best 12.80 meters in the triple jump and the SCIAC Multi-Dual with 6.46 meters in the long jump.
