Sprinters and Throwers Highlight Day One of SCIAC Championships for Kingsmen

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Day one of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference featured lifetime personal records for Cal Lutheran's pair of throwers and five qualifiers for tomorrow's track finals. 

Leading the way in the field events, senior Anthony Flores and junior Daniel Avila went back-to-back for seventh and eighth place in the men's hammer. Both recorded lifetime personal bests at 42.26 meters and 40.01 meters, respectively. 

On the track, freshman Evan Cox impressed by winning both of his heats in the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles. He qualified in the 110-meter with the second-best time of the day and a new lifetime PR of 15.46 seconds, just .02 seconds behind first, but .36 seconds ahead of third. Later in the 400-meter, he recorded the third best time of the afternoon at 55.36 seconds. Cox will join freshman teammate Emilio Guajardo tomorrow in the 110-meter, who qualified today in eighth at 16.14 seconds. 

Also claiming an automatic spot in tomorrow's finals, junior Chris Brodnax claimed first in his heat with a 49.83-second time in the 400-meter dash. Junior Obasi Dees will join him in the sprints competition, qualifying in the 100-meter dash at 10.98 seconds and in the 200-meter dash at 22.11 seconds, taking second in both heats.

Rounding out the day's final qualifiers, sophomore Connor Neufeld-Griffin clocked in at 4:09.52 in the 1500-meter run, good for 11th and the opportunity to chase the medal tomorrow.
