VENTURA, Calif. — JP Guimaraes Jr. tied for sixth and Adam Cartozian placed ninth to lead Cal Lutheran men's golf to a fifth place finish at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship. Guimaraes Jr. also earned the Jesse Clark Sportsmanship Award, voted on by players in the SCIAC.
Cal Lutheran hosted the championship which was held Sunday through Tuesday at Olivas Links. The SCIAC Championship event was the third leg that makes up the seven rounds of deciding the 2023 SCIAC Champion. The Kingsmen shot 1-over-par and finished with 865 strokes. It was the fourth lowest score in program history. They shot 286 in the first, 289 in the second, and 290 in the third. Their seven round total was 2,063 strokes.
The championship consisted of eight teams and 40 individuals. The SCIAC individual champion was decided at the event. Guimaraes Jr. tied for sixth at 4-under-par. He fired a 2-under-par 70 on the first day. He followed it by carding an Even 72 on the second and third day. He recorded a total of 212 strokes, which is tied for fourth-lowest in program history.
Cartozian was the next Kingsmen and placed ninth at 2-under-par. He shot a 78 on day one. He improved over the next two days with a 69 and 67, respectively. He finished the championship with 214 strokes, tied for sixth-lowest in program history.
Jimmy Solano made it three Kingsmen in the top-20. He was 18th at 4-over-par. He carded a 71 in the first round. He shot a 75 in the second and 74 in the third for 220 strokes.
Aaron Moore tied for 24th and Blake Fitzhugh was 34th. Moore finished at 7-over-par with 223 strokes (71-74-78) and Fitzhugh recorded 18-over-par with 234 (74-77-83).
The Kingsmen are ranked No. 25 in the Golfstat Top-25 poll. With the SCIAC Championship over, they await the decision from a committee for the NCAA Championship.
