Cox, Gardhouse, Metcalfe Selected SCIAC Athlete of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Cal Lutheran student-athletes Evan CoxKaitlin Gardhouse, and Bethany Metcalfe earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monday morning. 

Cox garnered the award for men's track and field and Gardhouse and Metcalfe swept the women's water polo awards. It is the second time this year that Cal Lutheran has swept the women's water polo awards.  

Cox (Ventura, Calif.) was named the SCIAC Track Athlete of the Week for the third time in his career. The junior has won every event he has competed in this year. This past weekend, he won the 110 and 400 meter hurdles with 15.07 seconds and 54.29 seconds, respectively. His time in the 110 meter hurdles tied the ninth fastest time in program history. 

Gardhouse (Agoura Hills, Calif.) earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week for the second time in her career. The No. 1 Regals pummeled Chapman 22-10 to stay undefeated. CLU was only up 5-4 after the first quarter. Gardhouse and the Regals' defense put the clamps on and only allowed one goal in each of the second and third quarters. The Regals took a 16-6 lead to the fourth and cruised to the win. The junior had three goals, four assists and four drawn ejections in the win. 

Metcalfe (Oakdale, Calif.) garnered her first SCIAC Athlete of the Week award. Metcalfe and the CLU women's water polo offense thrived, putting up five or more goals in every quarter. The sophomore scored four times, on just six shots, to help lead the Regals to victory. She added three assists and two drawn ejections.
