Regals Prevail Over Panthers

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team took on the Chapman Panthers under the lights at William Rolland Stadium Wednesday night for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup. The Regals pulled out a 2-1 victory to remain unbeaten at home.

CLU combined a dominating performance in the attacking third of the pitch with stellar defending on the back line to come out on top against its conference rival.

Cal Lutheran took a 1-0 lead when Kali Youngdahl delivered a well-timed through-ball to Trinity Martinez who fired the ball into the back of the net to bag her third goal of the season.

The Regals doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when Maddy Griess launched a long throw into the box and Jordan Miller was there to head the ball inside the near post to make the score 2-0.

Chapman got back into the game in the 81st minute when Lindsay Erl struck a long direct free kick from 35 yards out to cut the lead in half. This was the only shot on goal for the Panthers.

Cal Lutheran would manage to hold on to its lead and see out the victory. The defensive back line was led by Tessa Dwyer, Olivia Leyva and Zandra Stewart who kept the Panthers in check for majority of the night. They held Chapman to only two shots with one on goal.

The Regals tallied 11 shots with six on goal. Sam Cornejo, Bri Pinal, Ryley Settles and Youngdahl each contributed one shot on goal in an impressive offensive performance.

Gabby Flores was between the posts for the Regals and improved her overall record to 6-2.

Cal Lutheran (10-2-1, 7-1-1 SCIAC) will be back at home on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7:00 p.m. to play their homecoming match against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
