NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A cross-country weekend trip for the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team ended on a high note as the Regals doubled up Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, for the victory and a Captains Classic tournament split.
In what was described by the host Christopher Newport sports information staff as, "The most competitive game of the weekend with quality chances on both sides," CLU prevailed as Sam Cornejo scored the first goal of her collegiate career.
In the 44th minute, the freshman forward headed a ball into the net on an assist from Trinity Martinez to give the Regals a 1-0 advantage at the intermission. After halftime, Virginia Wesleyan equalized in the 51st minute and the teams would battle without any offense until the 79th minute when Kali Youngdahl added her second goal of the trip on a pass from Katie Weaver with the ultimate game winner. The Violet and Gold held off the Marlins for the final 11 minutes.
Alysa Frazier earned the first start of her college career, protecting the Cal Lutheran goal for all 90 minutes. The freshman goalkeeper turned away five VW shots in the win.
Six different players took at least one shot for CLU and Youngdahl fired off three of the 11 to lead the way.
Virginia Wesleyan (1-3-1) took 24 total shots with eight coming from Marli Hayward.
Cal Lutheran (2-1) returns to Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to get Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play underway against Redlands at 7:00 p.m.
