WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team fell to the No. 6 team in the nation, Williams College, 4-0 in the third round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship at Cole Field in Williamstown, Mass.
The Regals held strong defensively in the first half, only allowing Williams one goal in the 15th minute of play. Despite Williams' 17-1 advantage in shots, Cal Lutheran only trailed the Ephs 1-0 at the end of the first.
In the second half, Williams' (19-1-1) came out strong and scored within the opening minutes, doubling their advantage over the Regals. In the 62nd and 68th minute the Ephs scored yet again, making their lead 4-0. Cal Lutheran struggled getting past Williams defense, as the Ephs held a 10-2 shots-on-goal differential in the game. Trinity Martinez and Bri Pinal provided the Regals' attempts on target in the trailing effort.
Cal Lutheran had its best chance of the day in the 82nd minute when Pinal flew down the right side, past a defender, and attempted to send a cross-field shot toward the net. However, Williams' goalkeeper deflected the shot out for a corner.
Williams finished the game with a 25-10 shot advantage. Gabby Flores made six saves for the Regals, while the Ephs' tallied two.
With the loss, Cal Lutheran concludes its incredible 2017 season with a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship, a NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance and an overall record of 16-4-3.
