Four Regals Named All-West Region

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Announced Tuesday by the United Soccer Coaches, Cal Lutheran's Olivia Leyva was named to the 2017 NCAA Division III Women's All-West Region First Team, Kali Youngdahl and Trinity Martinez were named to the Second Team and Sam Cornejo was named to the Third Team.

Leyva earned her first career All-West Region nod as she represented the Regals on the First Team. The senior from La Canada, Calif., started all 22 games for Cal Lutheran. She was a force on defensive end and a key component that helped the Regals secure nine shutouts. Cal Lutheran had a low goals-against-average with 0.96, which was tied for the second-best in the SCIAC. On the offensive side, she tallied two assists.

Youngdahl was named All-West Region for the third time in her career. She was named to the Second Team in consecutive years and was a Third Team honoree as a freshman. The senior from Renton, Wash., started 21 of the 22 games for the Regals. As a forward, she led the team in two offensive categories as she tallied 13 goals and seven assists for a total of 33 points. She scored seven game-winning goals which ranks fourth in the nation for Division III.

Martinez was one of two freshmen on the Second Team. Originally from Northridge, Calif., she came to Cal Lutheran and made an immediate impact on the defense. Martinez started 20 games for the Regals and played in 21. She was a big part of the defense that had nine shutouts. Even though she played defense, she helped CLU on the offensive end. She tallied the second-most assists on the team with six and added three goals.

Out of five total freshmen honorees, Cornejo was one of two Regals to garner All-West Region recognition as she was named to the Third Team. A native of Hesperia, Calif., she was a big difference for the Regals on the offensive end. The forward started 11 games and played in all 22. She was second on the team in goals with seven. She tallied 14 shots on goal with a percentage of .609.

"I am extremely proud of our players for these honors," said women's soccer head coach Frank Marino. "They accomplished so much this season and took the program further than ever before."

The quartet and many more teammates helped lead the Regals to the team's first NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance in program history.
