Kingsmen Finish Third; First-Ever Podium in Program History

COMMERCE, Calif. — The California Lutheran men's swimming and diving team finished on the podium for the first time in program history as the Kingsmen turned in a third-place finish at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships which was held Wednesday through Saturday at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.

Cal Lutheran entered the final day in third-place. The Kingsmen increased their lead on Redlands and took home the bronze medal. CLU finished the SCIAC Championships with 574 points. Pomona-Pitzer was the Championships with 1,086.5 points. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps was second with 998.

Two Kingsmen won events on the final day of competition. Ben Brewer claimed the 1,650-yard freestyle and Andreas Nybo touched in first for the 200-yard butterfly. Brewer's time was 15:42.28 and Nybo's time was 1:48.94.

The Violet and Gold had two student-athletes and one relay team place third. Jonah Hobbs was third in the 1,650-yard free with 15:56.52 and Zach Zamecki placed third in the 100-yard free with 45.37. Zamecki then combined with Liam McCallum, Jacob Frigard and Thelen McKinna-Worrell for the third-place finish in the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:03.62.

CLU turned in three of the top-four times in one event. Stephen Blaauw was fourth in the 1,650-yard free with 15:59.26. McCallum then placed fourth in the 100-yard free with a time of 45.96.

Davy Thomas had a top-five finish in the 200-yard backstroke. He had a quick time of 1:52.20.

The Kingsmen also scored points in three more events. The relay team of Thomas, Hobbs, Chase Ahrens and Nick Kenny placed 12th in the 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:10.19. Brian Bender was 15th in the 200-yard breast with 2:13.88 and Thomas Hamburger was 18th in the 200-yard fly with 1:58.54.

The next event for swimming and diving student-athletes is the NCAA Division III National Championships which are held March 21 through 24 in Indianapolis.
