Kingsmen Looking to Finish Top Three in SCIAC

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Cal Lutheran men's swimming and diving team is coming a fourth-place finish at the 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (SCIAC) Championships and is looking to break into the top three for the 2017-18 season.  

The Kingsmen return 12 guys, which were key to last year's success, and adds 13 newcomers to the mix.

The senior group and the team are led by captains Flavio Filho, Jonah Hobbs and Zach Zamecki. Zamecki earned All-SCIAC honors five times at the 2017 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. He placed third in both the 50 free (20.66) and 100 free (45.83) while also reaching the podium as a member of the 200, 400 and 800 Free Relays. Hobbs received one All-SCIAC honor for his contribution on the third-place team in the 800 freestyle relay.

Fellow classmate Jacob Frigard garnered two All-SCIAC honors as he was a part of the 200 and 400 free relays. Rounding out the senior class is Oscar Alvarado and Collin Campbell.

The junior class had one swimmer receive one All-SCIAC honors as Thelen McKinna-Worrell was part of the 200 free relay. The junior class is looking to step up this year and is represented by transfer Brian Bender, Connor Donohoe, Jack Hartwell and transfer Marcus Rodarte.

Sophomores Ben Brewer and Liam McCallum highlight the sophomore class. Brewer became the first Kingsmen to compete at the NCAA Championships. He received All-America recognition as he placed fourth in the 1,650 free (15:28.20). Brewer garnered five All-SCIAC honors and raced to a NCAA "B" cut in the events. McCallum earned his All-SCIAC honor as a part of the 400 free relay.

The rest of the sophomore class is looking to make a big splash this season. Rounding out the group is transfer Chase Ahrens, Thomas Hamburger and Vitaliy Kostylov.

The Freshman class is looking to come in and make a big difference right away. The class includes Brandon Alvarez, Joao Casaca, Kye Daniels, Nick Kenny, Andre Laserna, Sean Marchewski, Andreas Nybo, Ryan Sorgie and Jonathan Van Mannehes.

The Kingsmen get their season started Saturday as they host the Cal Lutheran Invitational at 10 a.m.
