VISTA, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's golf team finished 12th out of 15 teams at the CSU San Marcos Invitational which was held Monday and Tuesday at the Shadowridge Country Club. The tournament featured 80 golfers.
The two-day tournament had 18 holes on each day. The golfers had to play through extreme conditions of heavy rain and wind.
Junior Stefan Nelson recorded the best finish for the Kingsmen and tied for 31st. He shot a 5-over-par 77 on Monday and a 75 on Tuesday to finish with a two-round total of 152 strokes (8-over-par). He had the third-best scoring average on Par-3 holes with 3.00 and tied for the fifth-most birdies with six.
Drake Jones finished with the second-best score for the Kingsmen. The sophomore shot rounds of 75 and 78 to give him 153 strokes. He had the sixth-most pars at the tournament and tallied 24. He led Cal Lutheran on Par-4's with a 4.25 average.
Senior Jake Rosen and sophomore Ryan Kyaw rounded out the team score. Rosen tied for 56th with rounds of 77 and 79 for a total of 156 strokes. He was one of only three golfers to record an eagle. Kyaw had a rough start and shot an 83 on day one. He turned that around and fired a team-low 74 on day two. He had 157 strokes and was 61st.
Junior Drew Christofferson was also in action for the Violet and Gold. He tied for 77th after shooting an 82 in both rounds. He was second on the team with a Par-3 scoring average of 3.13.
Oklahoma Christian won the event with a two-round total of 583 (295-288). Chico State (296-288-584) and UC san Diego (300-292-592) rounded out the top-three. The Kingsmen placed 12th after a 311 in the first round and a 306 in the second for a total of 617 strokes.
Chico State's Kelley Sullivan (73-67-140) won a playoff to claim the event. He defeated Sonoma State's Devin Gregg (71-69-140) on the fourth hole of the playoff. Western New Mexico's Sam Ruston claimed third-place with a two-day score of 141 (72-69).
Cal Lutheran continues the season with a dual against Chapman. The Kinsgmen and Panthers will face off Tue., Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. at Tierra Rejada Golf Course in Moorpark, Calif.
