Kingsmen Open 2018 with Third-Place Finish; Kyaw Ties for Third

VENTURA, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran men's golf team opened 2018 with an impressive showing as Ryan Kyaw tied for third, leading the Kingsmen to the exact same finish, at the CA State Intercollegiate which was held Monday and Tuesday at the Olivas Links Golf Club.  

The tournament featured 12 teams and 64 individuals. The par for the course was 72. The teams played 18 holes each day.

Cal Lutheran tied for third after shooting a two-round score of 582, giving them 6-over-par for the tournament. The Kingsmen shot a 289 on Monday and a 293 on Tuesday. Chapman tied CLU for third. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps walked away with the title and finished with 13-under-par (277-286-563). The University of Texas at Tyler was the runner-up with 1-over-par (289-288-577).

Kyaw tied for the lowest round at the tournament as he fired a 67 (-5) on Monday. He turned around and shot a 73 Tuesday and tied for third with an overall score of 140 strokes (-4). 

Stefan Nelson made it two Kingsmen in the top-15 as he tied for 13th with 145 strokes (+1). He shot a 73 on Monday and followed it up with a 72 on Tuesday. 

The third-best score on the day for CLU went to Jake Rosen. He shot a 75 in the opening round and finished his tournament with a 73 on Tuesday. His score ended at 148 strokes (+4) as he tied for 24th

Drake Jones and Drew Christofferson both fought to add to the team score as they finished tied for 47th and tied for 53rd, respectively. Jones shot 8-over-par and tallied 152 strokes (74-78), while Christofferson shot 153 stokes (78-75). 

Craig Thorlakson and Jackson Murrell competed individually for the Violet and Gold. Thorlakson tied for 24th at 4-over-par (75-73-148). Murrell fired a 6-over-par as he tied for 36th (72-78-150).

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Austin Long won individualist honors as he finished at 8-under-par (68-68-136). George Fox's Mason Koch was the runner-up with 6-under-par (68-70-138). CMS golfer Ken Kong (68-72-140) and Chapman's Brody Hval (73-67-140) tied Kyaw at 4-under-par. 

The next and last fall tournament for the Kingsmen is Oct. 1-2. Cal Lutheran travels to Flowery Branch, Ga., to compete at the Oglethorpe Invitational at Royal Lakes Golf Club.
