Regals Win Third Straight Match; Take down Redlands

REDLANDS, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball continued its hot play Sunday afternoon as the Regals took down the Redlands bulldogs 3-1 in Currier Gym. The sets finished 25-22, 23-25, 25-15, 25-9.

The Regals completed a 3-0 week, notching wins against No. 2 CMS, La Verne and Redlands. The win is the third-straight in conference for Cal Lutheran as they improved to 7-4 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play. CLU is now 13-9 on the year. 

The play around the net was a difference maker for the Regals.  CLU tallied nine total blocks and held Redlands to only two. Cal Lutheran forced the Bulldogs into a hitting percentage of .074. 

Amanda Roberts recorded a match-high 16 kills. She added 19 digs for her 11thdouble-double of the year. It is her fourth-straight double-double for kills and digs. She moved to ninth all-time in the CLU record books for kills and has 959 for her career. She also ranks sixth all-time for digs with 1,128. 

Cal Lutheran continued its stellar play at the net. Maci Haddad led CLU with eight block assists. In three of the four last games, she has tallied eight-plus blocks. She also connected on eight kills. Her current attack percentage of .358 ranks seventh-best in Cal Lutheran's record books for a season. 

Samantha Landrum recorded the second-most blocks with five and Jordan MacArthur added two more. Landrum added five kills. MacArthur filled her stat line with seven kills, 11 digs and three service aces. It her third career match with double-digit digs. 

Jennifer Kent recorded her second career double-double with 16 assists and 10 digs. She added one kill and one service ace. Steph Rolfson had a team-high 19 assists. 

Carly Rose Howard made it four Regals with double-digit digs. She put up a match-high 21 digs. It is her eight game with 20-plus digs. She was two kills shy of a double-double with eight and added three service aces. 

Redlands jumped all over Cal Lutheran in the first set and went up 4-0. The Bulldogs went up six multiple times in the set with the last time being 18-12. A perfectly called timeout resulted in six straight points for the Regals as they tied the set. Haddad got the run started with a kill. After n Redlands' error, Howard served an ace to make it three straight.

Roberts kept the points coming as she made it four straight and two errors by the Bulldogs tied the set at 18. The Regals went on a 11-2 run in all and took a 23-20 lead, their first lead of the set. Roberts and Mackenzie Martinez swatted down back-to-back kills for the final two points and CLU claimed set one 25-22.

The Bulldogs evened the match at one set apiece after taking a 25-23 set-two win. Cal Lutheran came out looking to rebound in the third set and took an early 6-3 lead. Howard served an ace and Haddad and Landrum both swatted down kills. Redlands got back into the set and cut the lead to one (9-8), but CLU was there for an answer. Martinez connected on a kill and Roberts made her presence known with three straight kills.  

CLU continued to put distance between them and the Bulldogs. Kent served an ace and then MacArthur recorded a kill to make it 19-12 Regals. The Violet and Gold went up 2-1 as Roberts tallied a kill for the final point and the 25-15 set-win. 

The Regals carried that momentum into the third set and shut down the Bulldogs for the win. The start of the fourth set showed off Cal Lutheran's strong play around the net. Landrum and Haddad combined for three points off blocks and Landrum also recorded a kill. CLU jumped out to a big 13-3 lead, after a string of five straight points. The five points came from Roberts and MacArthur. Roberts tallied three kills and MacArthur served two aces. 

Cal Luthern continued to increase its lead. The strong play at the net kept coming as Roberts and Haddad were there for a huge block. Haddad followed that up with a kill and CLU was up 16-4. The freshmen took over after that. Haddad recorded back-to-back kills and then combined with MacArthur for the block. MacArthur then swatted down a kill and the Regals were up 21-8. CLU scored eight of the nine last points, won the set 25-9, and took the match 3-1. 

Cal Lutheran continues the season with Caltech as the Regals host the Beavers Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
