Complete Team Win as Regals Sweep Beavers

PASADENA, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team showcased all facets of its game, with big offensive and defensive plays from many players, as the Regals swept the Caltech Beavers (25-22, 25-17, 25-11) Friday night in Braun Gym.

Eleven different Regals (8-6, 2-1 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) tallied a kill during their impressive offensive outing. CLU recorded a .302 hitting percentage, and hit .458 in the third set, as the Violet and Gold closed out the match. 

The defense was just as on-point as the offense. The Regals controlled the play around the net and tallied 10 total blocks. CLU also recorded 49 digs as they held the Beavers to a .113 hitting percentage. 

Amanda Roberts led the Regals with eight kills and swung with a .348 hitting percentage. Paris Dosch and Maci Haddad were next with seven kills apiece and had hitting percentages of .462 and .417, respectively. 

Sarah Hein recorded three kills and Lauren HellerSteph RolfsonMadison KarcichAmy McKee and Taylor Johnsonall added two. Mackenzie Martinez and Jordan MacArthur made it 11 Regals with a kill as they chipped in with one. Rolfson orchestrated the offense and dished out 25 assists.

Defensively, the Regals were everywhere. Carly Rose Howard led the team in digs and tallied 12. Hein was next with 10, Roberts was third with eight and Heller recorded four. Haddad was a wall at the net and tallied five total blocks. Dosch, Karcich and Roberts both added two. 

The Regals also recorded five service aces. Howard led the team with two and Hein, Heller and Julia Trento each added one. 

Caltech came to play in the first set and took a quick 5-3 lead. Roberts and Heller were right there with an answer as they swatted down back-to-back kills. Roberts and Dosch then combined for a block assist and Roberts had another kill as CLU took a 7-5 lead. 

CIT fought back and tied the score at 13 and then 21. The Regals' freshmen took over after that. Haddad combined with Karcich, and then Heller, as CLU recorded back-to-back blocks. Karcich and Haddad scored the final points of the first set as they both recorded kills. CLU took the first set 25-22. 

Cal Lutheran jumped all over Caltech in the second set. The Regals scored seven straight points and were up 9-2. CLU got four consecutive kills during the run, all from different Regals, as Dosch, Roberts, Hein and Heller all converted on their swings. Rolfson also served an ace during the run. 

CIT got back into the set (14-12), but CLU went on another run. Haddad recorded two kills and Hein served an ace throughout the 4-0 stretch. The Regals went up 18-12 and the Beavers called a timeout. A little bit later, CLU then scored five straight. Howard served two aces and Roberts and Dosch both tallied kills. The Regals won the second set 25-17 and took a 2-0 match lead. 

The big runs continued throughout the third set. CLU started with a 7-0 run, and then added a 6-0 stretch after CIT got on the board. The Regals had a commanding 13-1 lead. Haddad (twice) Hein, McKee (twice) and Roberts all swatted down kills. Later in the set, Trento served an ace and CLU was up 19-6. The Regals went on to sweep the Beavers as they won the third set 25-11.

The Regals return home for their next match. Cal Lutheran host Occidental Saturday night at 6 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
