Regals Fend Off Bulldogs in Four Sets

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran University women's volleyball team faced off against the University of Redlands in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match Friday inside Gilbert Arena. The Regals won 3-1 in a hard fought match.

The Bulldogs took a 10-5 lead forcing the Regals to call an early timeout to get back on track. The Violet and Gold scratched away at the lead, and managed to tie it up at 14 apiece. From then on it was a back and forth fight. The Regals were able to hold off the Bulldogs long enough to secure a first set win (25-22). Carly Rose Howard led Cal Lutheran in kills with six, while Amanda Roberts and Molly Holloway both contributed three.

Despite fighting point for point to start off the second set, the Regals were able to create a little cushion until deep into the set. This time it was Redland's calling the timeout to try to slow down the momentum. Cal Lutheran refused to back down though. Howard used the net to get her first ace of the night, and it put the Regals ahead by eight. Both teams committed a service error, but the Bulldog's error lost them the set (25-17). Holloway and Roberts each added a service ace during the set.

In the third set, Hollway added her second ace of the night, which allowed the Regals to tie it up at three. However, the Bulldogs came out fired up in hopes of a win to continue the match. They dropped in a couple of service aces and strung together some additional points to take a 14-9 lead.

The Bulldogs had a costly double-contact mistake, which gave Cal Lutheran the lead late in the set. The Regals did the same mistake putting them behind at 23-21. Redlands was able to find a few open spots on the court to give the Bulldogs their first set win of the night (22-25). Holloway led the Regals with nine kills, while Roberts and Paris Dosch had eight apiece through three sets.

The fourth set started out much of the same. It was a point for point battle. The Regals started to get some breathing room with the help from a pair of Bulldog attack errors. Those errors turned into the biggest separation so far in the set with a score of 19-14. Cal Lutheran never looked back after that, and waltzed away with a 25-16 win.

Dosch and Holloway led the Violet and Gold with 11 kills each. Holloway added three aces, six total blocks and two digs. Holloway helped CLU be a force at the nest as the Regals tallied 11.0 total blocks.

Roberts recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs on the night. Steph Rolfson kept the Cal Lutheran offense going with 41 assists. She added 13 digs for a double-double. Also contributing on the offensive end was Hope Stewart with nine kills, Howard with six and Amy McKee chipped in three more. Emma Cisneros-Luebke helped protect the backline with 21 digs.

Melanie Fyda, Megan Houston and Marlena Ramanis led the Bulldogs with 8 kills each. Fyda also contributed 20 digs and a service ace.

Cal Lutheran returns to the court Saturday to face Caltech for the first time this season in Pasadena, Calif.
