LA VERNE, Calif. — The first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's volleyball match of the season pitted a pair of American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 teams against one another. No. 17 Cal Lutheran fell, 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 15-25, 25-23, 15-10), to No. 15 La Verne in five sets on the road.

CLU dropped the first game, but battled back to steal the next two and take a 2-1 match advantage. Unfortunately, for the Regals, La Verne held off the Violet and Gold, 25-23, in the fourth set to force a deciding game that also bounced the way of the Leopards.

Hope Stewart provided a monster double-double with 22 kills and 17 digs to lead the Regals in both areas and all players for kills. She added the only solo block of the night for the Violet and Gold as well. Molly Holloway was the only other CLU player to break into double figures for kills with 11, hitting at a .231 clip. Jamie Smith did the majority for the setting, handing out 42 of the 55 total assists. At the service line, Amanda Roberts and Jennifer Kent had three aces apiece while Holloway and Steph Rolfson each finished with two. Finally, Holloway and Smith both notched three block assists tonight.

La Verne (8-1, 1-0 SCIAC) had three players with 10 or more kills, led by Delaney Lynch who had 12. Kristen Sanchez paced all players with 23 digs. Defensively, LV recorded three solo blocks and 22 block assists in the match.

Cal Lutheran (4-6, 0-1 SCIAC) returns to the Gilbert Arena tomorrow night to host Chapman with first serve set for 6:00 p.m.
