Vis Scores Late Game-Winning Goal to Give Regals Win Over Bulldogs

REDLANDS, Calif.Danielle Vis expertly scored the game-winning goal in the second half of overtime to give the California Lutheran University women's soccer team the 2-1 win over Redlands. This was the third consecutive victory for the Regals.

CLU were dominant in the shot column, out-shooting the Bulldogs 18 to 13 in the match. Possession was fairly even throughout the 107 minutes of play, but the Regals made the most of their possession as they put eight shots on target while UR had just five.

Vis was presented with a good chance to grab the opening goal in the 10th minute when she was sent through on goal, but her one-on-one opportunity was denied by the Bulldogs' goalkeeper.

Cal Lutheran got off to the perfect start through their impressive freshman Mandy Crawford in the 20th minute. The forward put her nifty dribbling on display after collecting the ball in the box, cutting on to her left foot and blasting her shot across goal to make it four goals in four games for the Simi Valley, Calif. native.

However, Redlands would quickly find the equalizer just a few minutes later to level the score at 1-1.

The Regals were eager to get back on the front foot and nearly regained the lead in the 27th minute after a bouncing ball in the penalty area eventually found the head of Mackenzie Boulware, but her attempt would be saved.

Janelle Gutierrez nearly scored a highlight-reel goal in the 38th minute when the freshman found space on the left wing and expertly maneuvered around three defenders before trying her luck with a curled shot aiming for the far post, but her shot just barely flew over the bar.

The Regals were the much better team in the first half, but were unlucky to see the scored tied after the first 45 minutes.

The second half was lively in the start as both sides had chances to push their team into the lead, but some solid defense and goalkeeping kept the score level.

It was a cagey affair for the remainder of the half and the game would go to overtime.

The Regals were extremely close to ending the match with a game-winning goal just before the end of the first overtime period when Alexandra Fagerberg's effort from outside the box beat the keeper but struck the crossbar. CLU were unlucky to not grab the winner.

However, the winning moment would come with just minutes to play when Danielle Vis made a brilliant run down the right wing. The sophomore attempted to square the ball across the byline but it was intercepted by a Redlands' defender. The ball would bounce around in the box and Vis would show her great attacking instinct as she was the first one to it and slotted it into the back of the net to give the Regals the 2-1 victory in the 107th minute.

Recording shots on target for CLU were Trinity Martinez, Crawford (4), Fagerberg (2), and Crawford.

Cal Lutheran extends their unbeaten streak to six games and will look to make it four straight wins when they return to William Rolland Stadium to host Pomona-Pitzer Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.
