Regals Cruise to Comfortable Win Over Caltech

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.– A solid performance from the California Lutheran University women's soccer team propelled them to a convincing 4-0 win over Caltech, Saturday afternoon at William Rolland Stadium.

The Regals were absolutely dominant from start to finish, racking up 18 shots (12 on target) while holding the Beavers to just one shot in the match. The defensive backline of Zandra Stewart, Katie Weaver, Trinity Martinez and Danielle Vis were in control for the entirety of the match, allowing a miniscule amount of scoring opportunities for the visitors.

While CLU was possessing the ball in the opponent's half for majority of the game, it took nearly the entire first half for the Regals to find the back of the net.

Hannah Trengove opened the scoring just before the halftime whistle with a wonderful effort from just outside the penalty area, arrowing into the bottom left corner of the net to give her team a 1-0 advantage. This brilliant individual display earned the junior her first collegiate goal.

Shortly after halftime, Maddy Griess was picked out on the back post by Alexandra Fagerberg, but her shot struck the outside of the right post.

In the 65th minute, the floodgates opened as Fagerberg was the first to a bouncing ball on the edge of the box and blasted a half volley that rose into the roof of the net to double the lead for the hosts. This was the second goal of the season for the Austin, Texas native.

Less than two minutes later, a cross from Darya Rasoli struck a Caltech defender in the box and found its way across the goal line to make the score 3-0.

To top it all off in the 90th minute, Ella Velcelean scored the first goal of her collegiate career on her collegiate debut with a long cross that drifted over the goalkeeper's head and into the side netting to seal the three points.

This was the third clean sheet of the season for the Regals, as their defense has now recorded a shutout in three of their five matches thus far.

Cal Lutheran gets back to action Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. when they travel to Orange, Calif. to take on the Panthers of Chapman.
