Regals Soccer Looking for 14th Straight SCIAC Tournament Appearance in 2019

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team has made it to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament the past 13 seasons and are fighting for its 14th consecutive appearance in 2019.

Since Head Coach Frank Marino took the helm of the Regals in 2009, CLU has won five conference championships and Marino ranks 24th in NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Coaching Records for winningest active coaches with a win percentage of .727 and a record of 146-48-22.

The Regals look to continue the SCIAC Tournament appearance trend and are led by the senior class of Maddy Griess, Kristina Spaur and Zandra Stewart. All three are members of the 2017 NCAA Sweet Sixteen team, the first in the program's history. Stewart was a United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team honoree in 2018 and was joined by Griess on the All-SCIAC First Team.

Experience will be key for the Regals and they have plenty of it with the junior class. Cate Boller, Mackenzie Boulware, Sam Cornejo, Alexandra Fagerberg, Gabby Flores, Trinity Martinez, Abby McHugh, Remi Miller, Hannah Trengove, and Katie Weaver continue to grow in Marino's system.

The class has its own list of accomplishments as Cornejo earned United Soccer Coaches Third Team honors and All-SCIAC Second Team (2017), Flores was an All-SCIAC First Team honoree (2018) and Martinez was the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year (2017).

The sophomore group, ready to step up and compete for playing time, consists of Sonia Chan, Kaitlyn Chandler, Janelle Effarah, Raquel Gunkel, Aly Legrand, Zoe Rodriguez-Willie, Alexa Soto, and Danielle Vis.

The freshman group, wearing Violet and Gold for the first time, features Mikaela Caltrider, Mandy Crawford, Aubrey Finicle, Kylie Garcia, Janelle Gutierrez, Olyvia Hinck, Emma Jonietz, Alex Kwasny, Izzy Martinez, Darya Rasoli, Natalia Valladares, Ella Velcelean, and Isabella Veljacic.

The Regals get their first test of 2019, Friday afternoon, and will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor in Texas with the start set for 3 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
