Cox Named SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year, MacKinnon Garnered Field Athlete of the Year, Sawyer is Newcomer of the Year; Nine Kingsmen Earn All-SCIAC

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — Cal Lutheran's Evan Cox was named Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Track Athlete of the Year, Jake MacKinnon was Field Athlete of the Year, Sebastian Sawyer was Newcomer of the Year and a total of nine Kingsmen earned All-SCIAC honors which the conference announced Thursday.

More Kingsmen to earn All-SCIAC honors were Brendon Carbullido, Connor Neufeld-Griffin, Chris Noji, Dillon Chong, Franklin Ruvalcaba and Nicholas Abbinanti.

All-conference honors in each event went to the top finisher at the 2021 SCIAC Championships. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cal Lutheran, Chapman, La Verne and Redlands were the lone participants for the SCIAC during the Spring of 2021.

Cox (Ventura, Calif.) was named the 2021 SCIAC Track Athlete of the Year after finishing first in the 110-meter hurdles and first in the 400-meter hurdles with respective times of 15.10 seconds and 54.53. The junior was also part of the Kingsmen's winning 4x400-meter relay team that registered a time of 3:28.88 with Cox as the anchor. He earned three All-SCIAC honors to lead the Purple and Gold at the SCIAC Championships.  

MacKinnon (Orcutt, Calif.) garnered the 2021 SCIAC Field Athlete of the Year honors. The freshman impressed at his first championships and earned top honors in the hammer throw with a toss of 38.38 meters, and received his first All-SCIAC award. He also placed second in the discus throw (36.93 meters) and third in the shot put (12.18 meters).

Sawyer (Woodland Hills, Calif.) was voted the 2021 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year. The freshman finished first in the 10,000-meter run with 34:36.53 and garnered his first All-SCIAC honor. He also placed third in the 5,000-meter race (16:13.60) to highlight his debut at the SCIAC Championships. 

Carbullido (Redwood City, Calif.) received his first All-SCIAC award as he claimed the triple jump. The junior's final jump of 12.96 meters propelled him to the top of the podium. 

Neufeld-Griffin (Portland, Ore.) earned his first All-SCIAC honors, while competing in his first meet of the season. The junior came back to help out his squad and raced to a time of 3:56.48 and won the 1,500-meter run. 

Noji (Serman Oaks, Calif.) made it to the top of the podium in the high jump and snagged his first All-SCIAC honor. The junior continued the success for the Purple and Gold and cleared a height of 1.47 meters. 

Abbinanti (Senior, Simi Valley, Calif.), Chong (Senior, Oxnard, Calif.), Cox and Ruvalcaba (Sophomore, Moorpark, Calif.), won the 4x400-meter relay to earn All-SCIAC. In the final event of the day, the team made it to the top of the podium, with a time of 3:28.88.
