Kingsmen Bested by Top Team in SCIAC, Pomona-Pitzer

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The No. 1 team in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Pomona-Pitzer, showed why they are at the top as the Sagehens bested Cal Lutheran men's basketball 85-66 on Saturday night.

CLU's Cole Thomas and Palmer Chaplin both hit the double-digit mark as they scored 13 and 11 points, respectively. Thomas made the most of his time on the court and was 6-of-7 from the field and hit his lone three-point shot. Chaplin did a little bit of everything as he added three assists, two rebounds and one steal.

Jarrett Powers was next with nine points while Miles HoustonLogan McCullough and Brooks Mallory all chipped in with eight.

Powers and Houston tied for the team lead in assists with five and Houston pulled down the most rebounds and had six.

The biggest difference in the game came to the rebounds. The Sagehens pulled down 36 boards and held the Kingsmen to just 19.

The game was close early on and tied five times during the first six minutes. Every time the Kingsmen or Sagehens would take the lead, the other team was there for an answer.

Pomona-Pitzer final got some separation after back-to-back three-pointers had the Sagehens up 20-14 with 13:06 left in the half. The Sagehens made it 10 points straight and grabbed a 24-14 lead with 11:49 left.

The Kingsmen did not back down and continued to cut the lead to 10 points or less. CLU continued to chip away and a layup from McCullough made it 41-34 at the break.

Cal Lutheran carried that momentum into the second half and a layup by Powers and a three from Chaplin made it a one possession game. CLU kept it close over the next few minutes before the Sagehens pulled away. With the score at 44-41, PP used a 20-4 run over the next six minutes and took a commanding 64-45 lead. The Sagehens coasted the rest of the way and won the contest 85-66.

Cal Lutheran (4-19, 2-12 SCIAC) has one last road game before returning home for senior night. The Kingsmen travel to Caltech on Wednesday with tipoff set for 7 p.m.
