Sagehens Use Strong First Half to Down Kingsmen

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran hosted Pomona-Pitzer for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon inside Gilbert Arena, and the visitors out-scored the Kingsmen 34-15 in the first half to build their lead as they would later cruise to a 70-48 victory.

Leading the charge offensive for CLU was Brooks Mallory who came off the bench and knocked down three triples to finish with nine points. Charlie Lee also hit a pair of three-pointers and racked up eight points while Miles Houston and Jarrett Powers each chipped in with six points apiece.

The Kingsmen (2-13, 1-6 SCIAC) did not have a player in double-digit scoring and struggled to break down the Sagehens' suffocating zone defense. The Kingsmen shot just 26.3% from the field and were out-rebounded 51-31 as they struggled with the size of the opposition.

Pomona-Pitzer (12-3, 5-1 SCIAC) quickly made their presence felt as they opened the contest on a 17-2 run. Cal Lutheran managed to regroup and put together an 8-0 run, but the Sagehens would respond in a big way to take a 34-15 lead at the half.

The teams would mainly trade baskets in the second half as PP would only out-score CLU 36-33 in the second half.

Lachlan Hannemann buried a couple shots from beyond the arc to get himself going offensively. However, his offensive contribution would not be enough as the Kingsmen would fall to the first-place Sagehens 70-48.

The Kingsmen fall to 2-13 (1-6 SCIAC) and head to La Verne for another SCIAC contest on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.
