THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.– It came down to the final possession, but the game-tying three-pointer rimmed out as time expired and Cal Lutheran would fall to Mount. St. Vincent 69-66.
The Kingsmen led for nearly the entire game but a late surge from the Dolphins down the stretch would lead them to victory. CMSV were more efficient from the field, shooting 44.8% while CLU were just below 40%.
Senior Palmer Chaplin led his team with a career-high 19 points while knocking down five threes. The Zephyr Cove, Nev. native also contributed six rebounds and five assists on the day. Miles Houston was effective in the post, going a perfect 5-5 from the floor with 11 points and six boards to his name. Cole Thomas and Carlton Brown were also particularly effective as they each chipped in 10 points.
The teams would mostly trade baskets to start the contest and neither team could really find an edge. Brown got Cal Lutheran on the board, scoring the first Kingsmen points of the game with a nice catch-and-shoot three-pointer. Palmer would get his day started with a jump shot, layup and three-pointer to tie the score after Mount St. Vincent had built a lead.
Trailing by two with just under three minutes left to play in the first half, CLU would close the half on a 6-0 run to lead 33-29 at the break.
CMSV came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half, pushing their lead to 43-36 after taking advantage of some Kingsmen turnovers. The visitors proved to be quite effective in transition with 11 points off turnovers.
The game would go back and forth but CLU found themselves with a three-point lead with four minutes to go. A timely shot from beyond the arc game CMSV some life, tying the game 64-64 with just over three minutes to play.
Another three from the visitors gave them a three-point lead. After a layup from Houston and two made free throws from Dolphins' Evan Kalos, the Kingsmen would trail by three with less than a second remaining in regulation. CLU inbounded from underneath their own basket and found Chaplin open well beyond the three-point line. His shot would roll around the iron but, unfortunately, find its way out and Cal Lutheran would fall by the score 69-66.
The Kingsmen fall to 1-5 but look forward to beginning SCIAC play when they host Chapman Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.
