CLAREMONT, Calif. — Cole Thomas matched his career-high of 17 points, but the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags outscored the Cal Lutheran men's basketball team 46-28 in the second half and walked off the court with a 72-47 win on Wednesday night.
Thomas continued his hot stretch and tallied double-digit points for the eighth straight game, which i also every game he has played in this season. He was 6-of-7 from the field and 5-for-7 from the free throw line as he tied his career-high for the third time this season.
Thomas also led the team with four offensive boards, tallying six altogether. Palmer Chaplin and Miles Houston recorded the most boards on the team with seven apiece. Chaplin added six points, four steals and two blocks while Houston added three blocks and three points.
Tomas Calvo came off the bench and was CLU's second leading scorer with seven points. After Chaplin's six, Lachlan Hannemann, Charlie Lee and Jarrett Powers all had four each.
CMS outshot CLU 41.5-percemt from the field to 34.7. The Stags also shot 37.5-percent from three, forced the Kingsmen into 19 turnovers and outscored Cal Lutheran's bench 38-13.
The Kingsmen held their own in the first half, taking the lead two different times. The defenses prevailed during the first seven and a half minutes as the score was tied at 6. CMS then turned on the pressure and jumped out to a 15-8 lead over the next few minutes. CLU answered with a run of their own as Cole and Lee made jump shots. The Kingsmen kept the lead close and were only down 26-19 at the half.
In the second half, the script was flipped for the Stags as the offense poured in from all over the court. CMS opened the half on a 26-8 run over the first eight and a half minutes and took a commanding 52-27 lead. The Kingsmen fought hard, but weren't able to close the gap as the Stags grabbed the conference win 72-47.
The Stags (10-3, 2-2 SCIAC) held the Kingsmen (2-10, 1-3) to their lowest scoring output and worst three-point field goal percentage (15.4) of the season.
The Kingsmen continue the season with three home contests. Cal Lutheran looks to bounce back on Saturday as they host Occidental at 2 p.m.
