Sanchez Nearly Breaks Program Record on Day 2 of SCIAC Championships

COMMERCE, Calif. — Three individual Cal Lutheran Regals and two relay teams qualified for Friday's finals on day two of the SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships. After the first fourteen events, the team sits in seventh place with 142 points, just six points behind the sixth spot.

Senior Grace Sanchez highlighted the morning, coming out of the preliminaries as the top qualifier in the 50-free at 23.48, just .04 off the school record she set last year at the NCAA Championships. She went on to finish fourth in the finals at 23.78 later that night.

Joining her in the finals, she swam the opening leg of the 200-free relay followed by junior Brianna Baldwin, freshman Brieyana Walton and junior Jamie Shultz. The team finished in seventh, clocking in at 1:40.72.

Rounding out Friday night's results, juniors Emily Sharpe and Jessica Van der Laan finished 13th and 16th, respectively, in the 500-free. Sharpe touched the wall at 5:18.18 and Van der Laan at 5:21.57.
