Regals Close Out 2018 at Banana Slug Invitational

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran Regals closed out the 2018 portion of their season with a two-day contest against the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs, Friday and Saturday. Though 10 Regals made the podium, Cal Lutheran was edged by UCSC by a final tally of 1165 to 876. 

Individually, junior Emily Glass led the group with two first place finishes. She took home top marks in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke at 1:12.50 and 2:35.47, respectively. Also taking home a first-place finish, sophomore McKenzie Kelly took first in the 200-butterfly, touching the wall at 2:11.88. She also placed third in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:31.25. 

Joining them, freshmen Brieyana Walton and Avery Conrad tabbed three top-three finishes apiece. Walton took second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.37) and third in both the 50-free (26.99) and the 100-free (59.81). Conrad placed runner-up in the 200-individual medley (2:22.70) and 400-individual medley (5:00.09), and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.51). 

Rounding out the group, junior Brianna Baldwin nabbed second in the 100-free at 59.38 and third in the 50-free at 26.72, junior Emily Sharpe finished second in the 200-free at 2:07.86 and sophomore Gabriella Schultz placed second in the 100-butterfly at 1:05.39. For the divers, sophomore Abby Hiller took second in the both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives at 171.90 and 129.60, respectively. 

The team also brought home four top-two finishes in the relays. The Regals finished runner up in the 200-freestyle relay (1:47.90), the 800-freestyle relay (8:56.91), the 200-medley relay (1:58.40) and the 400-medley relay (4:19.51). 

Cal Lutheran returns to the Samuelson Aquatics Center in the new year, opening 2019 with the Chris Knorr Invitational on January 4-5.
