No. 2 Regals Fall to No. 1 Sagehens

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – In a matchup between the top-two teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), California Lutheran's Nikki Roed recorded a hat trick, but the Regals fell to the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens 9-4 Wednesday afternoon at the Samuelson Aquatics Center.

The Regals suffered their first loss in SCIAC play and are now 7-1. They are 15-6 overall. Pomona-Pitzer is now 6-0 in the SCIAC and 12-10 overall.

The big difference in the game was power plays and shots. Cal Lutheran had many more power play opportunities, but couldn't convert. The Regals were 1-for-8. The Sagehens were 3-for-4. Pomona-Pitzer also had a stifling defense and only allowed CLU's offense to get off 13 shots. PP got off 23 shots.

Roed had a game-high three goals and added one steal. Mardell Ramirez tallied the other goal. Erin CunefareKristi McGee and Megan Seeman all had one assist. Bailey Meyer was in goal and made 10 saves.

Pomona-Pitzer took the lead right off the bat. The Sagehens tried to add a goal a few minutes later, but Meyer came up with a huge save. PP then made it a 2-0 lead, with both goals being scored off power plays. After a third Sagehen goal, Ramirez put the Regals on the board with a nice pass from Seeman. At the end of the first, Pomona-Pitzer had a 3-1 lead.

The second quarter saw a lot of defense. The Sagehens finally broke through with 1:35 left in the half and had a 4-1 advantage. In the third quarter, the only goal came from the Regals. With the shot clock running down, Roed scored with a mid-pool center cage lob. The goal cut the Sagehens' lead in half.

In the fourth quarter, Pomona-Pitzer opened up a huge lead. The Sagehens outscored the Regals 5-2 and won the game 9-4. Roed scored two goals in the quarter and recorded her hat trick.

The Regals look to bounce back with games against Occidental and Brown. Cal Lutheran hosts Oxy and Brown Saturday at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively, in the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
