Regals Defeat Tigers; Fall to Bears

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The California Lutheran women's water polo team split with a pair of teams on Saturday in the Samuelson Aquatics Center as the Regals defeated the Occidental Tigers 13-4, but fell to the Brown University Bears 10-3.

The Regals got off to a great start versus Occidental as Nikki Roed, Kristi McGee and Victoria Rose Meek all scored in the first two minutes. Down the rest of the stretch, Christin Hirn scored twice and Mardell Ramirez and Roed both added a goal and CLU was up 7-0 after one.

Cal Lutheran took out its starters after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Regals outscored the Tigers 2-1 and were up 9-1 at the half. Bella Vares and Avery Karich scored the goals for CLU.

The teams continued that trend in the third quarter as the Regals scored twice and the Tigers had one. Megan Seeman and Mackenzie Thomas had the goals and CLU was up 11-2. In the fourth quarter, Meek added two goals as she recorded a hat trick. Oxy scored two goals in the quarter as the Regals won the game 13-4.

It was a complete team effort for the Regals. CLU was 5-for-6 on power plays in the game. Five different players tallied an assist and eight came up with a steal. Cal Lutheran used all three goalies. Bailey Meyer played the first quarter, shutout the Tigers and made two saves. Gaby Renteria came in for the two middle quarters and made eight saves. Miara Pipe played the final quarter and had two saves.

Up next for the Regals was the Bears of Brown University. The Bears got on the board first and added two more goals for a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.

McGee got the Regals going as she scored the first goal of the second quarter. Brown answered on the next possession, scored another a few minutes later and had a 5-1 lead. McGee scored her second goal with the assist coming from Thomas. Nicole Guerriero then scored a goal, but Brown scored three more times and had an 8-3 lead.

The Bears added one goal in the third quarter and pushed their lead to six. It was all defense in the third as that was the only goal allowed. The stingy defense continued into the fourth quarter. Brown added a final goal and won 10-3. Meyer had eight saves in the loss.

Cal Lutheran (16-7, 8-1 SCIAC) is back on the road for its next game. The Regals head to Redlands, Calif., to take on the Redlands Bulldogs Wednesday at 4 p.m.
