No. 2 Regals Cruise Past Bulldogs

REDLANDS, Calif. – California Lutheran's Nikki Roed scored a game-high four goals and goalkeeper Bailey Meyer made 15 saves as the Regals water polo team cruised by the Redlands Bulldogs 11-2 Wednesday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatic Center.

The Regals improved to 9-1 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference SCIAC). Cal Lutheran is one win away, or a loss by La Verne or Chapman, from clinching a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. Overall, CLU is 17-7.

Roed led the offense on with four goals on five shots. Sam Wulfestieg and Megan Seeman each added two goals. Christin Hirn, Victoria Rose Meek and Taylor Martinez all had one. The Regals scored their 11 goals on 21 shots and had a shooting percentage of .523.

Meyer was in the goal the entire game and made 15 saves. Redlands combined for 30 shots, only connected on two goals and had a percentage of .067.

Nicole Guerriero kept the offense moving and tallied three assists. Hirn and Kristi McGee both had two assists. McGee had two drawn ejections and six more Regals had one more. CLU also converted on 5-of-8 of its power plays opportunities.

Defensively, Roed had four steals, Meek had three and Claire Justman added one more.

Meek got Cal Lutheran on the board first and Hirn added another goal a minute later as the Regals had an early lead. Seeman increased CLU's lead and Redlands called a timeout. The Bulldogs scored a goal coming out of the timeout. Wulfestieg answered on the ensuing possession and it was 4-1 Regals. Roed and Wulfestieg each added a goal down the final stretch of the first quarter and gave CLU a 6-1 lead.

The defense picked up in the second quarter. Cal Lutheran didn't allow a single goal in the period. The Regals finally scored with 2:14 left in the half as Roed gave CLU a 7-1 lead.

The defense continued into the third quarter as CLU added two goals. Roed and Seeman both found the back of the net and the Regals extended their lead to 9-1. Roed added another goal with six seconds left and CLU led 10-1 at the end of the third. In the fourth quarter, each team scored once. Martinez scored the final goal for CLU as the Regals won 11-2.

Cal Lutheran is back home for its next game. The Regals are looking to clinch a spot in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament as they host Chapman Wednesday at 4 p.m.
