Regals Fall On Last Day of Indiana Classic

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The women's water polo team went 0-2 on the final day of the Indiana Classic as the Regals fell to Marist, 5-3, and Virginia Military Institute, 11-8, on Sunday at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center.

In the first game, Megan Seeman started the Regals off on a good note as she won the sprint. Cal Lutheran and Marist battled to find the back of the net but neither team was able to score in the first period. Marist's Lauren Smith scored the first goal of the game in the second period which was followed by another goal, giving the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead.

Cal Lutheran's Erin Cunefare won the sprint to start the third period off. Nicole Guerriero put the Regals on the board with a goal, but Marist scored two more times before the end of the third. Heading into the final period, Marist came out strong with a quick goal giving the Red Foxes a 5-1 lead. The Regals did not back down as Cunefare answered back and scored on a powerplay and then again on a penalty shot. Although Cal Lutheran fought hard, it wasn't enough as the Regals fell to Marist 3-5.

Bailey Meyer had 13 saves in the cage while Mackenzie Thomas led defensively with two steals and Victoria Rose Meek tallied two drawn ejections for the Regals.

In the second game against Virginia Military Institute (VMI), the Keydets scored three goals while the Regals were only able to put one away. Both teams scored three goals apiece in the second period. The Keydets put up an impressive five goals in the third period while Cal Lutheran scored two. In the fourth period, the Regals were able to score two more goals and Meyer finished with a shutout. VMI walked away with an 11-8 win over Cal Lutheran.

Guerriero and Kristi McGee both led the Regals with two goals apiece while Nicole Roed, Christin Hirn, Avery Karich, and Remy Wilkison scored one each. Roed led with two assists while Wilkison and Cunefare added one apiece.

Defensively, McGee had three steals while Cunefare added two and three more Regals had one more. Meyer was in the cage the entire game and tallied an impressive 18 saves.

Cal Lutheran (7-4,1-0 SCIAC) will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Redlands in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup at 4 p.m. in the Samuelson Aquatic Center.
