Stevenson Outslug Kingsmen

OWINGS MILLS, Md.Andrew Reina tallied a team-high 12 kills, Kelly Jew added 10 more, but Cal Lutheran men's volleyball dropped the second match of their East Coast trip to Stevenson, 3-1, on Friday night. Scores of the match were 17-25, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25.

The Kingsmen continued their four-game trip with a second straight loss and are now 8-12 on the year. The Mustangs outslugged the Kingsmen, tallying 58-to-41, and recorded a .265 percentage to .175.

The teams were almost the same at the net as Cal Lutheran had 9.0 blocks to Stevenson's 8.5. The Mustang's had the Kingsmen's number when it came to aces and converted on 10 serves. 

Reina and Jew led the Kingsmen in double-digit kills and Patrick Rowe and Justin Dietrich were next with seven each. Jacob Cudiamat spent most of the time in the setter position and recorded 25 assists, eight digs and two kills. Jew matched Cudiamat with a team-high eight digs.

Cal Lutheran had a rough start and fell into a quick 10-4 whole in the first set. The distance was all Stevenson needed as they took the first set 25-17. 

The Kigsmen bounced back in the second set. With CLU up 4-3, the Purple and Gold went on a 6-1 run and took a 10-4 lead. The Mustangs would keep it close as Cal Lutheran won the second set 25-21 and split the match at one game apiece.

With CLU up 12-10 in the third set, Stevenson used a 4-0 run and stole the lead. With the score at 17-15, the Mustangs used a 4-0 run to put the set away. Stevenson won the set 25-21 and had a 2-1 match lead. The Mustangs carried that momentum to the fourth set and won 25-17 and took the match. 

The Kingsmen end their trip on Saturday with two matches. Cal Lutheran takes on East Mennonite at noon and Southern Virginia at 2:30 p.m. Both times are PST.
