Kingsmen Thumped by Spirit

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran faced NAIA opponents Ottawa University (Ariz.) Thursday night inside Gilbert Arena, and could not manage to take a set as the Spirit walked away with a 3-0 sweep.

Ottawa (9-3) hit .481 as a team and only had nine errors on the night. Quaid King had a fantastic night as he posted 14 kills to lead the team. The Kingsmen (8-9) came out flat and hit just .049 in the contest. Andrew Reina and Andrew McFarlane tallied four kills apiece to lead CLU. Eli Moore was solid with six digs in the match.

In the first set, the Spirit gained the upper-hand early in the contest as they raced out to a 9-5 lead to force a Cal Lutheran timeout. Another surge from the visitors caused CLU to call another timeout after falling behind 15-8. Ottawa eventually cruised to take the set 25-13.

Set two was tightly contested as the Kingsmen only trailed 10-9 after kills from Andrew Reina helped stifle any runs from the Spirit. However, the visitors rallied to take a 15-10 lead and forced another Cal Lutheran timeout. The Kingsmen dropped the second set 25-13 after surrendering another big run.

Ottawa had gained all the momentum and quickly jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the third set. The final set was much like the first two as the Spirit clinched the 3-0 sweep after taking the final set 25-15.

Cal Lutheran hopes to turn things around on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. when they host Vanguard inside Gilbert Arena.
