THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — It's the fifth season since the men's volleyball program started back up and the 2020 campaign features trips to Northern California, Illinois and the East Coast twice.
The Kingsmen look to build on 2019, when they defeated their first top-five opponent and were ranked as high as No. 8 in the nation. They start the year with an exhibition with Pepperdine before returning home. The Kingsmen host Marymount on Jan. 8, at 2:30 p.m. in Gilbert Arena. Right after that, CLU will take part in its first of many tournaments.
Cal Lutheran travels to Santa Cruz, Calif., for the annual Slug Slam Tournament which is hosted by UC Santa Cruz, Jan. 10-11. The Kingsmen will take on Lakeland, UC Santa Cruz, Wells and rematch with Marymount. The Purple and Gold have never defeated UCSC, which finished No. 3 in the nation last year.
Up next for the Kingsmen is two three-game home stands broken up by an away exhibition with Cal State Northridge. The home contests consist of Fontbonne (Jan. 16), Vassar (17), NYU (18), Carthage (31), Augustana (Feb. 1) and Westcliff (1). The games in Jan. are all at 7 p.m. except for NYU at 6:30. Augustana and Westcliff are a doubleheader at 4 and 6:30.
Cal Lutheran gets back on the road for two road trips separated by two home games against NAIA opponents. The first road trip takes place Feb. 14-16 in Illinois while the second is March 5-7 in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. They will face good competition in North Central, Dominican, MSOE, Aurora, Benedictine, Juniata, Stevenson, Southern Virginia and East. Mennonite.
The fourth and final road trip takes the Kingsmen to New York for matches against Endicott, St. John Fisher, Lancaster Bible, Wells and Nazareth from March 20-22.
The last two games of the regular season are at home. CLU has senior day against Moorpark on April 2 at 7 p.m., before their regular season finale against UC Santa Cruz on April 11 at 6.
An at-large berth will decide the postseason for the Kingsmen. The NCAA Regionals are from April 17-19 and the Championships are April 24-26.
