CLAREMONT, Calif. —For the second consecutive day, the Cal Lutheran men's tennis team took on a top-10 opponent as the Kingsmen were defeated by No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.
The Kingsmen open SCIAC play 0-2 and drop to 6-5 on the season. The Sagehens improve to 3-0 in conference play and are 5-3 overall.
Cal Lutheran's No. 2 and 3 doubles team were downed 8-2 as Pomona-Pitzer took a quick 2-0 lead. The No. 1 team of Jake Haffner and Charlie Spina put up a fight, but were downed 8-4.
The Sagehens made quick work of the Kingsmen in the 4-6 singles spot and clinched the match. Sebastian Ariza was defeated 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot, Ryen Wagner fell 6-0, 6-1, at the No. 5 and Erik Lundeberg was defeated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Kingsmen impressed at the top of the lineup as No. 1 and 2 was a battle. After going behind in set one, 6-1, Spinna (no. 2) roared back to take set two 7-5. In a decisive third set, it went all the way to the end as he fell 10-8. At the No. 1, Haffner put up a fight, but fell short 7-5, 6-2.
Sean Yaghoubi also competed for the Kingsmen and was in the No. 3 spot. He fell 6-1,6-0, as the Sagehens recorded a clean sweep.
The Kingsmen face non-conference opponents before jumping back into SCIAC action. Cal Lutheran is home for a six-game homestand which starts on Tuesday with Westmont at 2 p.m.
