ORANGE, Calif. – Cal Lutheran opened Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play Sunday afternoon in Orange, Calif. but unfortunately started off on the wrong foot as the fell to Chapman 5-4.

The Kingsmen (3-2, 0-1 SCIAC) began by taking two of the three doubles matches in a promising start to the competition. Ben Vincze and Ryan Murphy cruised to an 8-0 victory to pace the Purple and Gold. The duo of Darvel Lossangoye and Charlie Spina followed with an 8-0 win of their own.

Isaiah Volk and Jake Haffner nearly clinched the doubles sweep for Cal Lutheran, but lost the tiebreak 7-8 (5).

In the singles side, Haffner started things off with a three-set victory 7-6, 6-7, 10-7.

Spina was the other Kingsmen to pull through with a singles win, taking his match 6-1, 6-3 to earn a point for his team.

Cal Lutheran struggled in the remaining matches, falling just one point short of host Chapman.

The Kingsmen travel to Texas for three matches on Feb. 22 against Texas Lutheran, Trinity (Tex.) and Mary Hardin-Baylor as they return to nonconference competition.
