THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – It came down to the final set as California Lutheran University women's tennis battled Vassar on Monday. The Regals came up just short as the Brewers took the dual 5-4.
The Regals saw their three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 4-2 on the season. The Brewers improved to 6-0.
Cal Lutheran took a 2-1 lead after completing doubles play. After Carolina Groff Hinojosa and Luisa Garcia lost 8-6 at the No. 2, Carmen Bufkin and Brennan Foreman won 8-3 at the No. 1 and Heidi Levanen and Joslin Seaberg claimed No. 3, 8-5.
The Purple and Gold made it 4-1, after the first two singles matches were completed, as they were one-point from a win.
Foreman and Bufkin were unstoppable on the day. Foreman took the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-2, and Bufkin won at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1.
The Regals could not hold onto the lead as the Brewers rattled off four straight points. Sophia Gawrit fell at No. 3 (6-2, 6-2), Garcia went three sets at the No. 4 and came up just short (1-6, 6-2, 4-6), Hinojosa was defated at the No. 5 (6-1, 6-4) and Lauren Sebastian was narrowly defeated at the No. 6 (6-3, 4-6, 6-7(3)).
The Regals remain home for one game before going back on the road for one. Cal Lutheran host Hardin-Simmons on Monday at 3 p.m.
