Former Kingsmen Rogers Wins Second Grey Cup

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran football alumnus Eric Rogers won his second Grey Cup as the Calgary Stampeders defeated the Ottawa Redblacks 27-16 Sunday night. Rogers and the Stampeders also won the Grey Cup in 2014.

Rogers tallied a game-high in receptions and yards. He caught six passes for 64 yards and had a long of 20. Prior to the Grey Cup, he scored three touchdowns, including the game-winning grab, as the Stampeders defeated Winnipeg and punched their ticket to the big game.

"It means a lot to win my second Grey Cup with the Stampeders," said Rogers. "The adversity we faced this year with the injuries at the wide receiver position, losing key guys and just plugging guys in, shows how much resiliency we have.

"This organization and a lot of my teammates came up just the past two years while I was out of football completely with my knee injury. So for us to come together and achieve what we did speaks volume of the type of men and football players we have on our team."

Rogers played for the Kingsmen from 2009-12. He helped Cal Lutheran win four straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championships.

"My experience at Cal Lutheran has helped me become a player my team can rely on, each and every game especially when the game gets close," said Rogers. "Being one of the better players and go-to wide receivers at CLU let me know I held a high responsibility in our team success.

"Football is the ultimate team game. Whenever Coach McEnroe and the offensive coaches gave me the opportunity to make a play, that trust from them made me a better and more "clutch" player. It has helped me deliver in big games, not only back at CLU but also in the Canadian Football League. I still speak with Coach McEnroe and Coach Lugo often. They're family and always have my back."
