LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. — Lexi Rond was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Newcomer of the Year, Bailey Meyer and Nikki Roed garnered First and Second Team honors, respectively, and Head Coach Craig Rond garnered Coaching Staff of the Year as the 2019 all-conference awards were released. The All-SCIAC awards and teams were announced Thursday morning following a vote by the league's member head coaches.
After a stellar freshman season, Rond (Oxnard, Calif.) was named the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year and earned First Team honors. As a center, Rond was a focal point of the offense and led the team with 54 goals and an impressive 99 drawn ejections. Her 99 drawn ejections in a season are a program record and she can be the first Regal to record 100 as CLU continues the season in the SCIAC Tournament. She added 16 steals and four assists.
Meyer (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned her third straight All-SCIAC honor and was named to the First Team for the second consecutive season. The senior goalkeeper has been instrumental to Cal Lutheran's success and has combined with the defense to hold opponents under five points in 13 games. She has 289 saves, 32 steals and 22 assists. Her 289 saves are 13 saves shy of her program record which she set last season. She is also 6 saves away from setting the all-time program record.
Earning her third straight All-SCIAC Second Team honor, Roed (Seattle, Wash.) has helped Cal Lutheran become one of the water polo power houses in the nation. The senior utility player has been all over the pool for the Regals, showing off all facets of her game. She is second on the team with 38 goals, tied for first in steals with 38 and has also recorded 11 drawn ejections, nine assists and seven field blocks. She is currently fifth in program history with 150 goals.
Rond and his coaching staff were named the 2019 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year having earned the same distinction during the fall on the men's side. Rond guided the Regals to the second seed in the conference postseason tournament for the second time in as many years, and for his efforts, has now earned SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors on the women's side for the second time in three years (2017).
Cal Lutheran is 19-8 overall and has a 12-2 mark in conference play. As the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, the Regals host No. 3 Whittier on Friday at 4 p.m.
