ALISO VIEJO, Calif.– This morning the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) announced the Week 20 Athlete of the Week honorees and Cal Lutheran's Kyle Ferreira, Bailey Meyer and Lexi Rond were all selected.
Ferreira is the Offensive Athlete of the Week for men's basketball, Meyer claimed Defensive Athlete of the Week for women's water polo and Rond earned Offensive Athlete of the Week for women's water polo.
Ferreira (Bakersfield, Calif.) led Cal Lutheran to a 1-1 week as the Kingsmen defeated Caltech, 95-74, and lost Occidental by the slim margin of 70-67. The senior guard was a sizzling 12-for-17 from the field against the Beavers (70.6%) and 5-of-8 from three-point range (62.5%) en route to his career-high of 32 points. He posted his fifth career double-double as he scored 20 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against Occidental. He added three assists and three steals on the week.
Meyer (Santa Ana, Calif.) and Rond (Oxnard, Calif.) helped guide CLU to a 3-1 week as the Regals played four Division I teams. The Violet and Gold knocked off St. Francis (N.Y.) (13-5), Siena (11-8), St. Francis (Pa.) (11-4) and came up short against Brown (10-8) as the duo swept the inaugural AOW awards for 2019.
A senior goalkeeper, Meyer earned the third AOW award of her career. She registered an impressive 52 saves over the weekend, including 12 against St. Francis (N.Y.), 15 verses Brown, 13 against Siena and 12 versus St. Francis (Pa.). She also contributed with 10 steals and an assist.
In her first collegiate games at center, Rond, showed sterling performances as she helped the Regals defeat three Division I foes. She scored nine goals and led the Regals with 21 drawn ejections, which led to seven conversions for a goal. In the win over St. Francis (Pa.), she scored a game-high five goals.
The SCIAC Athlete of the Week series is released each Monday throughout the academic year.
