All-Around Game Propels Regals Past Bulldogs

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Cal Lutheran women's water polo team showcased its offense and defense as the Regals defeated the Redlands Bulldogs 15-4 on Wednesday night.

The Regals were clicking on all cylinders and improved to 6-1 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play and 12-7 overall. Redlands dropped to 11-11 and 3-3 in conference play. 

This is the 10th game that the Regals have held an opponent to five goals or less. On the offensive end, nine different Regals scored. They were almost perfect on power play opportunities and went 8-for-10.

The defense continued its strong showing and goalkeeper Bailey Meyer made 16 saves. Nicole Guerriero led the defense with four steals and Mackenzie Thomas had two more. The Regals shut down the Bulldogs on power play opportunities and held them to 2-for-12.

Offensively, Lexi Rond recorded five drawn ejections, and four of those times, CLU scored a goal. Rond also led the team with a hat trick while Jessica DiazKaitlin GardhouseMardell Ramirez and Megan Seeman all added two each.  

The game remained close after the first quarter as CLU was only up 3-2. The Regals then scored 10 unanswered goals, five in the second and third quarters as they took a commanding lead. The starting unit went to the bench after the third with a commanding 13- 2 lead. Both teams scored two goals each in the final quarter as the Regals took the game with a final score of 15-4. 

The Regals are back in action tomorrow for a non-conference matchup. Cal Lutheran welcomes Macalester for a game at 5 p.m. in the Samuelson Aquatics Center.
