Ramirez Wins 200-Yard Free, Sets SCIAC Record

COMMERCE, Calif. — California Lutheran's Mardell Ramirez claimed gold in the 200-yard freestyle on day three at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships which was held in the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.

Ramirez set a new SCIAC record while winning the first event for the Regals at Championships. She swam to a B Cut time as she finished with one minute and 50.28 seconds. She earned All-SCIAC honors for the second straight day.

Melody Pope and Emily Sharpe also competed in the 200-yard free. Pope was 15th with a time of 1:58.27 and Sharpe was sixth 1:59.29.

The Regals 400-yard medley relay team turned in a fourth-place finish. The squad was combined of Emily Glass, Ramirez, Alexia Rojas and Grace Sanchez. They finished with a time of 3:57.65.

Glass also competed in the 100-yard breast and finished in 11th-place with a time of 1:09.13. Stephanie Shelley scored points as she came in 18th with a time of 1:13.43.

Rojas sawm individually in the 100-yard butterfly. She came in 12th with a time of 58.00. McKenzie Kelly raced to a 17th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:58.56

Pomona-Pitzer is currently in first with a score of 764. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is second with 673 and Chapman is third with 345. Redlands is fourth with 328 and Cal Lutheran is fifth with 276.

The 2018 SCIAC Championships conclude with the final day of competition, which is set to begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
