THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran softball is ready for its 2019 campaign which features a schedule with top competition and includes a 16-game home stand in March as well as 28 conference games.
The team looks to bounce back from 2018 and is gunning for a spot in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament in 2019. Regals' Head Coach Debby Day is ready for the season start, which gets right into conference play.
"We have an interesting season this year, with opening day being conference games at La Verne," said Day.
Cal Lutheran starts the 2019 season with six-straight games against SCIAC opponents. The Regals get the season underway on Feb. 16 with a double header at La Verne. CLU's home opener is Feb. 23 as they welcome Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to Hutton Field. The double header starts at 12 p.m. Chapman rounds out the conference stretch and will host the Regals, March 2.
"March will be busy and fun as we host a number of teams from out of state while playing conference games every Saturday," said Day.
The Regals have a 16-game home stand throughout the month of March. The non-conference competition comes in from all over the country as Hiram (Ohio), Manhattanville (N.Y.), Alfred (N.Y.), Cortland (N.Y.), Williams (Mass.) and Denison (Ohio) come to Thousand Oaks. The Regals also play Whittier and Redlands. The 16-game stretch is from March 4-22.
"April will be exciting as the SCIAC race is sure to come down to the last couple weekends," said Day.
Cal Lutheran's 28 conference games consist of two home and two away games versus their eight SCIAC opponents. The Regals welcome the defending SCIAC champions, La Verne, March 30. The last few weeks of SCIAC play have the Regals mostly on the road before returning home for Senior Day on April 27against Occidental.
The SCIAC Tournament brings together the top four teams with the No. 1 seed hosting on its campus. The tournament takes place May 3-5 with the champion getting the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
