Regals Take Game Two from Bulldogs in Extra Innings

REDLANDS, Calif.— Cal Lutheran softball pulled out an extra inning upset as the Regals defeated the Redlands Bulldogs, 13-11, in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Redlands won the first game 10-7.

It was the first extra inning win of the year for the Regals. They are now 1-3 in extra-inning games. 

The win was highlighted by two spotless innings from Meghan Henry to close out the win, six RBI from Celeste Ekman, four RBI from Catherine Slabaugh, a solo home run from Kendall Marinesi and a triple from Lauren Salvati

The Regals tallied 17 hits in the game with eight players notching at least one. Ekman recorded four hits and she set her career high in RBI. Slabaugh tied her career high with the 4 RBI.

Marinesi hit her 11th home run of the year and is leading the SCIAC. She is hitting with an impressive .417 batting average, .504 on base percentage and .922 slugging percentage. Her slugging percentage is also tops in the conference. 

Game Two
The Regals scored four runs in the first and second innings and took a big lead. Marinesi connected on the homerun to get the scoring going and Slabaugh hit a 2-run RBI single while Ekman added a RBI single. 

Redlands got one run back in the bottom of the first before Cal Lutheran opened up the 8-1 lead. Slabaugh and Ekman kept the points coming as they each recorded a 2-RBI double in the second. 

The Bulldogs got some runs back as they scored two runs in the second and third innings. After a RBI from Marinesi in the fifth and Rachel Barker and Ekman in the sixth, CLU was up 11-5. 

Redlands finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth and scored six runs to tie the game. A scoreless seventh inning sent the game to extra innings. Ekman added her final two RBI as she doubled to right center. 

Henry came in to close out the game in the seventh inning. After a leadoff double in the seventh, Henry got three straight ground outs. In the eighth, Henry sat the Bulldogs down in order and recorded two strikeouts, as CLU won 13-11.

Game One
Redlands took the early lead in the first game and scored four runs in the first inning and one run in the second. 

Cal Lutheran bounced back in the fourth and recorded three RBI as Lexie Findley, Marinesi and Rilee Grau all tallied one. The Regals added one more run in the fifth as Findley recorded a RBI double. 

After a home run by the Bulldogs in the fifth tied the game, CLU answered again in the top of the sixth. Marinesi tallied a RBI triple and Salvati added a 2-RBI double. The Regals had the lead as they tried off the Bulldogs. However, it was UR that had the final say as they scored four runs in the sixth, took a 10-7 lead, and held CLU scoreless in the seventh. 

The Regals (9-27, 3-21 SCIAC) have one more doubleheader before coming home for Senior Day. Cal Lutheran will be at Pomona-Pitzer on Friday with the games set for 12 and 2 p.m.
