THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — An equalizer in the 80th minute was called back as Cal Lutheran women's soccer was defeated by No. 13 Wisconsin-La Crosse 1-0 on Thursday night.

It was a calm, beautiful night and the season opener for both teams. It was competitive game with many shots, and fouls, as both teams started the season with intensity.

The Regals outshot the Eagles 14-8, as both teams registered five shots on goal. Isabella Veljacic, Izzy Martinez, Allie Lam, Ryan Kaneko and Lily Hatanaka all had one, but the Eagles' goalie turned them away.

Kelsey Slaugh was in goal and after the Eagles scored in the seventh minute, she kept them in check the rest of the way. She tallied four saves in her college debut.

The Regals had their chance for a goal late in the game. A perfect cornerkick had the ball bouncing around in the box. With many players coming together, a foul was called on Cal Lutheran, just before the ball found the back of the net.

It was a rough game on both sides as the teams combined for 25 fouls and five yellow cards. Good sportsmanship remained throughout as the Eagles held off the Regals at the end.

Cal Lutheran will look to get into the win column on Saturday and host Gust. Adolphus on Saturday at 5 p.m.
