Kahovec Represents CLU at NCAA XC Championships

INDIANAPOLIS – Cal Lutheran's Timmy Kahovec will represent the Kingsmen at the NCAA Division III Men's Cross Country Championships at Principia College in Elsah, Ill Saturday at 9 a.m. Pacific time. The teams and individuals were announced by the NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee.

"This will be Timmy's first NCAA Division III National Championship for either Cross Country or Track & Field and he is very excited to compete at his first National Championship," said assistant cross country coach Brett Halvaks. "I feel this will be a great opportunity for him to see what championship competition is like and race the best competition he has seen in his college career. Timmy loves to race so I know he will go out there Saturday, give his best performance he has on the day and represent Cal Lutheran to the best of his ability."

Kahovec qualified as an individual with his 16th-place finish at the NCAA Division III West Region Championships. He ran to a school record at Occidental's cross country course with a quick time of 25:58.55.

"Timmy ran a very strong race at the NCAA West Region Championships," said Halvaks. We talked before the race and decided on a race plan which he executed very well. He raced confidently the whole race, even leading the race through the first mile and finished strong over the last 600 meters which put him in position to qualify for the National Championships."

In order to be eligible to participate in the championships, teams and individuals must qualify in their respective NCAA regions. Thirty-two teams were selected to participate in each championship. The top two, seven-person teams automatically qualified from each of the eight regions, for a total of 16 teams. Sixteen additional teams were selected at-large.

Fifty-six individuals, the first seven student-athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate in each championship. Principia College is hosting the championships Nov. 18 at the North Farm Facility in Elsah, Illinois. The men's race will begin at 9 a.m. Pacific time followed by the women's race at 10:15 a.m. Pacific time.
