Kingsmen, Regals Garner Four SCIAC Athletes of the Week

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. — California Lutheran University student-athletes Ben BrownLogan DufordJP Melgoza and Andre Rivas earned Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Monoffenday morning.

Brown garnered the Men's Water Polo Offensive Athlete of the Week, Duford was named the Women's Defensive Athlete of the Week, Melgoza earned Men's Soccer Offensive Athlete of the Week and Rivas garnered Men's Water Polo Defensive Athlete of the Week. 

Rivas was selected for the fourth time in his career and Brown earned the award for the second time.  Duford and Melgoza were both named for the first time in their collegiate career's. 

Brown (Chula Vista, Calif.) helped guide No. 2 Cal Lutheran to a 3-0 week that featured a SCIAC win over No. 7 Chapman, 21-12, and non-conference wins over Biola (12-5) and Ottawa (Ariz.), 8-6. Brown tied the program record for goals in a game with eight in the win over the Panthers and added four assists and three steals. He also netted twice and assisted three others against Biola, and then totaled three goals and five steals in the win over Ottawa.

Duford (Denver, Colo.) and the Regals won a 1-0 double-overtime SCIAC win over Whittier. Duford was terrific between the posts for the Purple and Gold. The freshman goalkeeper played 108:49 and made three saves - including two in the second overtime period - to help Cal Lutheran secure the clean sheet.

Melgoza (Oxnard, Calif.) helped the Kingsmen secure the third seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament following a pair of 2-1 league wins over Chapman and Whittier. After firing two shots in the win over the Panthers, the first-year midfielder provided the heroics in the victory over the Poets as he broke a 1-1 stalemate in the 71st minute to help Cal Lutheran see out the win and secure a spot in the conference postseason.

Rivas helped pace No. 2 Cal Lutheran to a 21-12 SCIAC win over No. 7 Chapman, and wins of 12-5 over Biola and 8-6 over Ottawa (Ariz.). Against Ottawa, Rivas finished with the second-most saves in program history with 20 stops.
