Regals Volleyball Making a Difference Off the Court

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.  Over the past couple months, Cal Lutheran women's volleyball has kept busy, partnering with Go4theGoal and the Susan G. Komen Foundation in helping fundraise to fight against cancer.

During September, the Regals worked with Go4theGoal and raised over $1,500 for pediatric cancer. Go4theGoal's unwavering mission is to improve the lives of kids battling cancer by providing financial support, developing and implementing unique hospital programs, funding innovative research, and granting personal wishes.

The team then did its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign in the month of October and raised close to $2,500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. It is the most money the Regals have raised since beginning their annual campaign 15 years ago.

Leading the charge for the Regals, with Go4theGoal, was junior Lauren Heller and sophomore Jenna Jones. The duo got the fundraising started, and more SCIAC schools have joined them. In addition, the Cal Lutheran Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has also jumped on board to help with this wonderful cause. You can donate at the Regals' fundraising page or the SAAC's page.

"I'm really proud of Coach Roesel and our team's hard work of encouraging other teams to fundraise," said Heller. "It makes me really proud to be part of a team, at a school, that cares about others beyond the Cal Lutheran community. It feels good to know that we are contributing to something greater."

From 2016-19, women's volleyball participated in the Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative, where teams purchase gold laces to raise funds and awareness for local kids battling cancer. Laces are $5/pair with $4 from every pair going back to the cause.

In 2018 and '19, CLU Head Coach Kellee Roesel helped set up a conference wide event, where a number of other SCIAC teams got involved in Lace Up as well as online fundraising and raised substantial funds for the cause.

"Working with CLU women's volleyball for the last five years has been great," said Go4theGoal Athletic Coordinator Nick Kelleher. "Like most other non-profits, we have had a tough time fundraising since March and it's awesome knowing that we can always count on Coach Roesel and her team for support, even when things are so hectic for everyone."
