THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. —Cal Lutheran rang in the new year inside the Samuelson Aquatics Center against UC Santa Cruz in the Chris Knorr invitational on January 4-5. Junior Emily Glass and senior Grace Sanchez led the way for the Regals with two first place finishes apiece, headlining a total of 17 podium finishes on the weekend.
Glass and Sanchez joined senior Anna Lundsten and freshman Avery Conrad to open the scoring with a silver finish in the 400-medley relay with a combined time of 4:22.14. Glass went on to take first in the 100-breaststroke (1:11.52) and 200-breastroke (2:36.29).
Sanchez picked up her own top finishes in the 50-free (25.17) and 100-free (58.06). She additionally notched a second-place finish in the 400-free relay (3:59.11), swimming the opening leg followed by freshman Brieyana Walton and juniors Emily Sharpe and Jamie Shultz.
Outside the 400-medley relay, Lundsten also took third in the 100-backstroke, touching the wall at 1:07.75. Conrad also picked up two second-place finishes, recording a 1:03.98 in the100-butterfly and 2:24.57 in the 200-individual medley.
Walton, Sharpe and Shultz also made their way to the podium. Walton took home third in the 100-breastroke (1:13.93). Sharpe took third in both the 100-free and 500-free at 1:00.59 and 5:34.78, respectively. Rounding out the trio, Shultz earned bronze in the 50-free at 27.48.
Closing out the podium finishes, sophomores McKenzie Kelly and Abby Hiller recorded three more second-place finishes. Kelly recorded a 2:22.34, while Hiller recorded a 163.15 in the 1-meter dive and 150.70 in the 3-meter dive.
Overall, Cal Lutheran fell to UC Santa Cruz by an eventual team score of 214-130. The Regals return to action Saturday, January 12, against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens for their first SCIAC dual of 2019. Events start at 10:30 a.m. PST in Claremont, California.
